Miata Splitter / Air Dam

Recommended Posts

Made my way out to the garage to fashion up an exit ramp right about when the t-storms started....so spare time and spare parts resulted in this dumb looking front support.  Oogly and over-built but the sandwich plate support at the splitter I’m hoping will be functional.

It looks like some kinda viper fangs...i dig it!

Hollywood is totally right by the way, but you know that already. The moment you put jigsaw to sharpie marks, the fate of that plywood was sealed. And its not a pretty fate. Fun though 🙂

Splitter didn't explode on its on its maiden journey.  Although it sounds like I need to give it its bi-monthly wheel bearing.

Alignment, bearing, and other usual stuff, and it will be ready for the weekend.

There has to be a Subset of Japanese car culture devoted to this kind of roadster / utility hauler mashup? Like those bosuzoku 18 wheelers? 😀

The car is super composed now.  Previously on the 15x7’s, 375/325# springs and no aero, I was basically on (or over) the edge around all the fast corners, carousel, sugar and spice, etc.

I did it all at once, but with the 15x9’s, Toyo RR take-offs, 800/500# springs, and the aero, the car feels planted.

I’m up to 5mph faster through the corners and about 3mph slower on the straights, so the combo is doing something.

That said, I’m sure it’s 70% Tire, 20% springs, and maybe 10% aero.  Really bumpy / unsettled coming into carousel from the front straight on these springs and Bilsteins, but I think it’s worth it overall.

I’ve only ever ran MSR-H twice in the CCW direction.  End of June and now.  First session out with the car yesterday, it was 1sec faster than my PB.  Today it’s another second faster.  But it just feels planted and composed.

Very nice! Driving an aero car is quite a bit different isn't it?

You'll notice really good initial braking force, but of course as the car slows you lose grip, so be aware... threshold braking requires you to actually lift off the pedal a bit. Otherwise you'll lock up as you slow. If you brake into a corner then have sudden lockup for apparently no reason, that's what's happening. Also the best way to tear off a brand new splitter!

It was super fun.  Then I got a chance to drive another members “similar to a Miata P/W” car, and feel what quality suspension and brakes can do.....and was over a second faster, in 3 laps, on street tires 😂

However, the time delta/$ spent that the Miata has produced over the summer is pretty fantastic.  Happy customer, “Would buy again” lol

Yeah I need to do end plates and vent the hood.  The wing has stripped (actually, missing) thread inserts and I didn’t get around to making something work prior to the event.

A Miata dude came up to me mid-day as well and advised that I pull the weather-stripping off at the back of the hood, and remove the corner light in front of the intake to get some “cool air” in, and add a place to let air out.

I joked that it should add 50whp+, and then my next lap was coincidentally a second faster 😂

Or its soul-crushingly depressing if youre the guy who owns the other car and compares it's lap time / dollar ratio with that of the Miata-saurus you built😀

EDIT- Must Send BRZ harder ;) Picked up some Pirelli slick take offs a few weeks back, guess I'm mounting them this week haha!. Consistent 1:50.2XX on RS4s should magically be in the 40s I reckon.
