My first Corvette Ever C6 Z06

More of a build thread which will unfold as things get progressing over the next 3 months. So my first ever American Car after doing lots of reading and comparing is a very low miles C6 Z06 with the Z07 I think its called carbon pack. Past cars include but not limited to 911TT, M3 CSL, RS4 Supercharged, Westfield (like caterham) with a supercharged Suzuki hayabusa engine, and a few more interesting pieces, but never a Corvette. 

Its one of the last production year C6 Z06 with all the upgraded staff like TR6060 gearbox, bigger capacity oil tank, reinforced axles and a few more little things that make some difference apparently from the older models. Engine has very low miles, as I bought it from a guy that used it as a 5th car only taking it out on sunny days and I strongly believe that he never saw anything north of 70 mph. Only 2 things he has done to the car are the additions of an MGW quick shifter and an 103 halltech intake.

 

Some initial impressions after spending about 1800 miles with the car. 95% daily commute to work 5% 3 round trips on some highly twisty roads.

1. GM run out of budget probably when they got to R&D the shocks. Leaf springs and some really bad quality shocks and the thing is wobbly and unsure of where it needs to go after some speed. Rear shocks have terrible bound/rebound characteristics specially on bumpy parts of the road where the car tends to loose grip at the rear very quickly

2. Stock brakes are equal to joke..lol..no consistency and if you push hard for a few minutes brake fluids start boiling and the brake pedal goes all the way down without much effect

3. Gearing ratios / final gear. The 3.42 on stock power is just painfully long. you are really waiting for 3rd upwards to make it to the rev limiter. Good torque though throughout the rev range and linear power delivery

4. Quality of interior...my version is decent but inferior compared to the german counterparts

then why oh why did I buy one!?!? well, the car has huge potential. Lightweight, Aluminum chassis, carbon fiber fenders, proper cross suspension geometry front/rear, ideal weight distribution, very strong gearbox, and a wealth of knowledge on how to make these cars go, brake and handle the road fast. Almost same thoughts I had when I got the 911TT(996) as a stock car and we lived happily ever after for almost 9 years and many track miles.

As with every car I owned this one is no exception. It is a project to perfection (as I define it to my liking!). The car will still have to maintain decent street manners but also be able to handle itself on track. Use will be 70% road - 30% track.

The areas needed to be addressed briefly are:

1. Engine - needs to go faster. New engine on the way making some proper power with increased reliability. Expected baseline power to the wheels according to spec 650+ (to be conservative). Power adders and E85 will be added once I get a feel for the car.

2. Aux. components and cooling - needs to operate at lower oil/water temps and not break down under use and abuse. Oil cooler kit, new radiator with fans, better water and oil pump, oil pan buffle and tank inserts are some of the components helping to cool the fluids but also reduce sloshing effects of oil during high lateral Gs.

3. Suspension - the most critical part of this whole project. Rwd, perfect weight balance, no silly unnecessary electronics really make a rewarding experience when you master it and go fast in it. Coilover shocks and springs, sway bars and links, camber kit, motor mounts, differential mounts, spherical bearings gave way to Delrin, racing hubs, bump kit, steering rack upgrades are a few of the mods to make to make it turn sharp. Havent decided yet on just harness bar or rear roll bars. Corvettes seems to have an issue with their A-pillar not their B so probably harness bar is the way to go

4. Brakes - When you have some speed you need to be able and stop soon enough. Ap racing or Stoptech. haven't decided which of the two yet.

5. Aero - for track use in order to keep it planted on the ground. Serious look good staff that help keeping the foot on gas more at speed.

6. Gearing - After testing the car in its new form will decide if the 3.42 will give way to a 3.9 final gear ratio. As I am planning to use a double clutch mantic 9000 cerametallic in the new engine, I will regretfully go with the heavy flywheel to maintain good street manners (15 lb heavier than the lightweight flywheel)

6. Reduction of weight - engine, wheels, seats, brakes, exhaust and in general from wherever we can reduce it while keeping it with all proper comforts (ac, sound deading panels, etc). will be substituting some parts with carbon but the "diet" will be decided after measuring the car on race scales. Everything will be removed with the mindset that the balance of the weight shall remain approximately the same throughout the project. Driver diet is also included! .. good incentive!

Aim is to test the car and get some decent telemetry data as stock on track at 14-15th September during driver's edge HPDE and then back again with the rest of the mods for a consistent comparison. That's it for now. I will revert with more details. the new engine is expected to be ready by 1st of October and in the same time most of the other parts will have arrived. will be updating with photos this threat. Your clearly a madman!  Saying it needs more power and brakes.  Can't wait to hear of the laptimes your pulling after all the mods. Any trackdays yet to get baseline?

Another SSB Vette! Welcome to the club. Here's how mine looked when I picked it up.

Looks a bit different now though. Great choice going with wide body. I didn't know any better and went with the Coupe.

Castrol SRF will take care of the soft brakes in the interim. Congrats on the sweet ride! Still miss my '13 Z006 - was such a blast! More power? Your call, of course...as long as you can drive it hard and have dependability! Cooling, cooling and more cooling would be my main focus. Like mentioned above...a good baseline test would be nice....to be able to say that I went from X:XX.XXX to _______, a reduction of _______ seconds at _____ would be good. Sometimes the changes you make may not help....just something to consider.

If I had a do-over I would do:

1) Cooling ( I used Improved Racing oil cooler kit and Dewitt's radiator)
2) Safety
3) Brakes
4) Everything else

With a BBK like AP Racing, might have to get new wheels to clear the new calipers..but wheel spacers will suffice if both at same time aren't in the cards. If you do decide on AP Racing (which is the best according to practically every Corvette track driver), I would suggest don't get the entry level Sprint kit. When it works, it is fantastic..but some users have experienced caliper crossover line failure..myself included. The more expensive options don't have external crossover caliper lines to fail, plus can hold a bigger pad..so well worth it IMO. Something else I wish I had known ahead of time lol

Delrin bushings for the control arms are a very nice recent upgrade I did...they are from Borg Motorsports.

Mark Petronis at AMT Motorsports sells seat mount/rails..and a crap load of other stuff. I have just about all of his products and they are top notch. He even sells some things not listed on his site such as OMP Steering wheels. And after a single purchase, he might give you a deal on one or 2 items..such as Brey Krause harness bar (which I also have)

Murray Motorsport has the absolute lowest prices on OMP racing seats if you're considering that brand at all. You'll just have to wait for shipping from Ireland.

There's a FB group named Corvette Track Enthusiasts you can join for some of the most active Vette track drivers feedback. Between there and Corvette forum autocross/road racing forum...you can find info on just about any question you have.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions guys. Really appreciate them. Big Monkey I see a lot of alignment in our choices. I started this project by setting a target of what I actually want from the car to do. This is based on the use of the car. As I said earlier the car will be used for normal street use and the occasional track use. Having set my mind on the car I wanted to try (being in US it was imperative to try a corvette!..looking into the options I opted that the C6 Z06 is the most reliable option to go forward for. 

For discussion purposes the following are my choices based on each category I mentioned. 

1) Engine. Step completed. I ordered a complete engine from LME based on a fully forged rotating assembly in an LSR block with Brodix heads and roller rocker arms with all the possible options I could add on this one. As I want to run some nitrous down the line for some straight line fun the rings are gapped for this purpose. We expect very decent power outputs of this engine and highly increased realibility based on use. The T&D rocker arms allowed us to run a bigger cam with higher lift spec. The power band is expected from 3200 onwards which is also acting as an "intermediate" traction control reducing torque at the low rpms.

2) Auxiliary engine components (its a mix of supportive equipment to the engine):

Sounds nice! You may want to go from a roll bar to a roll cage. Also, get some Michelin slicks on those Finspeed wheels!!!

I ll try to keep the cage off for now. I have another dedicated track car. this is more of a properly setup street car with some decent track abilities.

Whoa dude! That build sounds freaking amazing! I can't wait to see it on a track!

Any chance you'll be able to do some before and after track times? With maybe track days in between upgrades? That would be pretty cool IMO

Welcome!  However, some clarity on your post about your car.  Did not see a year (11-13 for Supersonic Blue):

In 2011, RPO (Regular Production Option) CFZ carbon splitter and rockers but also got the black painted carbon fixed roof.  It was available on a regular Z06:  from the online GM Order Guide:

Yours is not a Z07 package nor is is a Carbon Limited Edition (RPO ULZ).  Those had a raised carbon fiber hood (RPO B92) (think ZR1 w/o the see-through opening), CCB brakes, carbon fiber fixed roof, Z07 suspension, Michelin Cup tires, etc.

For 2012 and 2013, B92 (Carbon Fiber raised hood, Z06) could be ordered without any other packages required whereas it was only available in 2011 as part of the ULZ package.

Yours has the Q44 wheels with 275/35/18 front and 325/30/19 rears.  The Carbon Limited Editions had the ZR1 size wheels (19x10 and 20x12 with 285/30/19 and 335/25/20)

You have a great car to start with and your list of mods is a great start to an awesome track car!  I have never owned a Vette yet, but, have almost bought one new and used many times over the life of the C6 and C7 only to have other projects and life get in the way - plus my inability at times to make a decision on my next play car!

Witnessed it driven in stock form yesterday and was blown away. It's rare to see a Corvette, especially stock, properly slid around the track 😎

uhm..it was only due to my lack on knowledge of the track and inability to find the right lines that I had to ….uhm...rotate the car somehow in order to place it in the right place for the turns 🙂😄

Minor update on parts:

Clutch is sorted. Will try for first time a triple-disc (always had double disk so far)

2. Coilovers and sways ordered. Went with LG but for a custom valving on G2s + G1 sways. Even though the details were not disclosed to me on my altered than normal G2 valving, my description of requirements from the coilovers was decent enough. I will hopefully be able to have them installed for the 13th of October. 

3. Steering rack DRM bushing was ordered...seems to be working as we found out recently

4. Tomorrow I will be finishing with the AMT camber kit with studs F/R + motor and diff mounts pending either the Delrin AF kit or the spherical bearings from AMT

clutch is here at last 🙂 after lots of debate and having frequent street drivability in mind but also being able to hold the 1000+ bhp I went for the first time in my life with a triple disk clutch (always had double disks). Steve the owner of monster clutches was very adamant on the fact that this clutch assembly with the lightweight flywheel is perfect for the street. Organic disks of course for ease of use in traffic...and we ll see! just a few pics from the unpacking yesterday. New slave cylinder, remote bleeder and billet bearing included in the kit. Rated for 1200 whp

its a...street car with track aspirations....dedicated race car (still with license plates) will be completed next year if they stick to schedule ..  plus my son likes it 🙂 and we have his toddler seat in the passenger seat permanently ..he is like "daddy lets go vroom"

lol I should be there.    I have to test before NOLA on some software changes on the car.   Which that just sounds stupid.   "re-zeroing ride height trim" from the mag ride delete.

makes me wonder how complicated the C8 is going to be going full racecar from stock...

well ironically, GM did seem to learn "some" lessons from previous generations.  Like my car operates fine without TPMS and it doesn't seem to care about tire diameter as much when the "nannies" are still on.  

Hopefully they'll add a provision to disable mag ride without having to resort to simulators and software tricks. 

 

There is some minor electrical dumbfuckery, like my eLSD won't function after turning the car on after the kill switch it turned back on, I have to turn the car off and back on again.  (I store the car with the kill switch off)  

 Not having steering wheel buttons has pushed me to get an AiM MXP logger as I am unable to see 75% of my gauges due to all the errors/popups but that would be a non issue had i just kept my stock steering wheel.  

 

So, I think people will be able to take the C8 pretty far as a race prepped car.  I am curious to see how harnesses are gonna be crammed into the cockpit of the C8.

Seems like a heavy clutch setup.  My "street car" is a dedicated track car which I also use to go get coffee on the weekends or an occasional milk run.

Real street.... i mean track cars use solid hub discs.  Still street able of course.  I also learned power means pretty much nothing in the terms of fast laptimes and it's all driver.  I inspire to be as fast as lobster one day.... I'm "think" my car is almost as quick but the driver is sadly behind.

My clutch is a lightweight design from spec which I'm installing new since I just upgraded the trans to a level 2 (only since I broke the synchro keyway)  and the new pressure plate is billet aluminum so I'll reduce the weight a further 4lbs.  Flywheel is billet aluminum that weighs 12lbs vs the stock steel unit at 22.

Everything done to this car is for the track.... but it's still a tagged street car.  Not sure how much that clutch setup weighs but it seems heavy.
