  1. In for November 23rd if the Miata is ready.
  2. With the guys at MSR Houston throwing their eyes on it, I'm sure they'll find anything else that might be of concern. Though I'm pretty confident this should be it.
  3. Talking about that. Sent the Miata over to MSR Houston so Jim and his team can give it their blessings and deem it safe for track use. Had a few things to button up as well. After throwing it on the lift, we noticed the subframe wasn't square and the steering rack sat lower on the passenger side than the driver's side. Might explain the darty feeling I was experiencing. Went home and started doing some research on whether this is normal or not. Came across an old post on the JV6 Miata Facebook group from one of the previous owners. They had gone over a bridge and ripped the oil pan off along with the bottom of the block. Eventually swapped the motor and got a new Gen 2 oil pan, and then was sold to me. I called BJ at Minitec. He confirmed that the steering rack should be sitting straight. That impact bent the subframe out of shape and damaged the steering rack with it. With this being the weaker Gen 1 subframe that's known to crack in it's week points with heavy track use, I ended up ordering a new Gen 2 subframe that had additional bracing. And again, down the rabbit hole I go. Along with that, ordered a new depowered rack, and drive shaft. Hoping the drive shaft will sort out the vibrations above 60mph. We'll find out after the new subframe goes in. Also got another Sparco R323 since it was the same wheel in my first Miata. Trying to use the exact same setup, even old seats, so everything can feel the same. Less of a learning curve. Steering wheel, seat, and harness is in. Rear seat mounting point bumps removed for additional headroom clearance. Next in line is the subframe swap and steering rack, and it should be good to go. When it's ready, plan is to toss it around on the track to see how this Flat Out Suspension coilovers do. Of they're trash, will look into some Xida Gen 2s if I can find a used set. Let me know if any pop up 👀

  5. I’ve been on the search for a used drive shaft and came across these sites so far. Not too familiar with the local junk yards, so I wanted to make a list to make it easier to shop around in the future. Here’s what I’ve got so far.   6. Looking for a drive shaft for my 99 Miata with a 6 speed. I hear any 99-04 drive shaft will fit fine. Currently have an after market drive shaft with what looks like bad U Joints. Getting hard vibrations at 60mph. Would rather swap a factory one in and call it a day. If theres any places you know where I can pick one up or have it delivered to MSR Houston, please let me know.
  7. Have you thrown the FRS around on the track yet? If not, take it out for a couple of track events and see how you like it. If it’s not to your likings, get back in the Miata!
  8. I spoke to Ed at 949 racing earlier today. He took out some time to educate me on the Xidas. Chances are I’ll go that direction once I find out how the Flatout Suspension Coilovers handle.

  11. My new Miata has a J32 swap and coilovers from a company called Flatout Suspension with external reservoirs . Haven't read much on them except they used to be big in the Subaru world, and are now out of business. My previous Miata had Ohlins as per the recommendation from Gas Head Motorworks. I was happy with them, no complaints. Then again, I never had anything else to compare them to. Wanted to get some feedback on what you would consider the best coilovers/sway bar/end links setup for a track use only Miata. Will only be participating in the National HPDE Championships. Will never be driven on the streets unless it's going to and from MSR Houston. I've come across the big named items: Xida Gen 2's, Flyin' Miata Fox Suspension, and Ohlins. I've been told Xidas is like Gods butter. Is there one from the bunch you recommend, or anything else that I haven't listed?
  12. Gen 1 starter sits at the very bottom (which is what this car has). Gen 2 clocked it to the side for more ground clearance. Tony has the exact setup on his swap, Gen1 adaptor and Gen 2 pan, and said its been doing him well so far. Will probably look into a Gen 2 adaptor and Gen 3 pan (pan sits above frame rails) down the road for piece of mind.
  13. I've heard! They just came out with a Gen 3 oil pan which sits above the frame rails. Need to call them.and ask if it's compatible with a Gen 1 transmission adaptor.
  14. It got sold to a guy that lives 10 minutes down from me! Ended up buying a JV6 swapped Miata from Arkansas. Tracked down the new buyer of my old Miata and convinced him to trade my factory seats for the Ultrashields in his car. Now that I have seats, I need harnesses.
  15. Recently made a 18 hour road trip to Arkansas and back home to pick up this Miata with a JV6 swap. Motor isout of a 3.2 Acura CL. I've always loved the idea implanting a motor into a car that came from a different manufacturer. Just seemed cool. Found this and decided to pull the trigger. Has a few loose ends I need to tie to have it track ready. Recently found the owner of my old Miata and convinced him to trade the Ultrashield seats for the factory ones in my new Miata. Hope to see you guys out at MSR Houston soon.

  17. From a Miata to a Corvette, and now back to a Miata. This time with the JV6 swap. Leaving Arkansas now. 9 hours to go till I'm back home!
  18. Question for the S2000 guys. I've been doing research on an S2000 as an HPDE car. Other than thee AP1 having a 2.0l and AP2 having a 2.2l, the thing I come across the most is the AP1 for what ever reason has an "unstable and twitchy rear end" compared to the AP2. Can't figure out what exactly the difference is or why it happens. If I decided to go down the S2000 route, should I stay away from from the AP1s? They are noticably cheaper than AP2s, leaving more funds for track days and consumables.

  21. Well that didn't last very long. The Vette is sold! Took the Vette our for a few track days. The car was fun, but I really missed the Miata everytime I was on the track. Something about driving the Miata as hard as you possibly could was a lot more fun than the Corvette, even if the Miata was doing slower lap times. The guy I sold my Miata to was also in the market to sell. Figured I can buy it back and get back into the Miata scene. Good news is, I sold the Vette. Bad news is, he's already parted out the hard top, roll bar, harnesses, wheels, and coilovers. So buying back my old Miata is out of the picture. Now I'm sitting without a toy. Back in the market for a track ready Miata/s2000/etc. Something in that light weight category that's fun to drive balls out. Keep me posted if anything catches your eye. #Ragrats
  22. Are there any shops in Houston that have a selection of seats on their floor? I'd like to try to sit in a few to see which fits best.
  23. Looking for a new seat to replace the factory seat in my C5. Not looking for an aluminum seat. If anyone has a Cobra Suzuka, OMP HTE-R, or anything comfortable in nature laying around, let me know! P.S. I'm 6'4" @ 180 lbs. The XL seats will be no good.
  24. I sold my track duty Miata for a stock C5 Z06. Took it out for its first track day, and it man did I miss my Miata! A lot of it was because the C5 is completely factory and felt like it was floating on the track. I actually tried putting the C5 on the market, but didn't get any realistic offers. So I figured, why not double down and turn this into another money pit! Rather than feeling bad about selling the Miata, I've decided to give the C5 an honest chance. Want to get the basics done to it so I can have some fun at MSR Houston. Plan to have this be my HPDE car i take out 4-5 times a year. I spoke to GSpeed at MSRC and got some help from them. Wanted to see if I can get some help from yall on this setup. Here's what I have in mind so far: Wheels: Speedline 18x10.5 square setup Tires: NT01 315/30/18 Suspension: I've been recommended to look at the Penskee 7500/8300 series coilovers. Though they're $4500-5500. Anything else more budget friendly you recommend? I've heard the factory leaf springs dont cut it for track use. Any options on this? Seat: Cobra Suzuka seat with AMT billet floor mount. Should give me enough head space at 6'3". Steering wheel: Sparco R383. Factory steering wheel is too big. Coolers: Need to look into all the necessary coolers (coolant, trans, engine, diff, brakes). Any suggessions? Oil Pan: Not sure if a baffeled oil pan is necessary for 100-200 TW tires. Additional: I've been reading that its highly recommended to upgrade the valve springs as they're known to crack and drop in the cylinder. This "honest chance" its going to be a pretty expensive one, but I'm thinking if I can have it decently setup, I can atleast hold back the urge to sell this for another toy. If there are any other parts you would recommend, please share.
